The cost of planting a tree can vary significantly depending on several factors, but let’s take a closer look using a recent project in Mauritius as an example. Planting a sapling there costs about $4, and here’s how that money is typically spent:

Seeds/Seedlings/Saplings

Seeds are the cheapest option but have lower survival rates and take time to germinate and are harder to procure.
Seedlings, young trees with a diameter of up to 1 inch, offer a middle ground between cost and survival rate.
In Mauritius, saplings (young trees with a diameter of 1 to 5 inches) are planted, costing between $1 and $3 each, depending on the species.

Transportation and Labor

Local farmers are paid by the hour for transportation and planting, which are considered billable hours.
The cost varies based on site conditions; for instance, rocky terrain in Mauritius slows down planting speed.
Approximately $1.50 is spent per sapling for labor and transportation.

Land
